Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday stressed on the need for research in the agriculture sector, stating that India is 'desperate' for a second green revolution.

"How can we make our agriculture more scientific and increase productivity? Solutions are there for these issues. Research is important in the agriculture sector, and this cannot happen only in one place. A revolution in agriculture can take place in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Assam...the eastern part of India," the Prime Minister said.

"There is desperate need for a second agriculture revolution in the country," he added.

The Prime Minister is in Hazaribagh to lay the foundation stone of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) here.

He will later depart for Varanasi.
