Former American basketball star Shaquille O'Neal has reportedly come under criticism for mocking a disabled man's selfie with his own contorted impersonation.

The retired NBA star posted a picture on Instagram of his own contorted face next to Jahmel Binion's selfie, which earned more than 14,000 likes with NBA player Trey Burke and rapper Waka Flocka Flame joining in on the teasing.

According to News.com.au, although the post was later deleted, however, Binion, who has missing teeth and abnormal hair growth caused by the rare disorder ectodermal dysplasia, expressed his hurt at the mockery by O'Neal, whom he had considered his basketball idol.

Stating that he respected the retired player's charitable works and advocacy for disadvantaged children in America, Binion said that although he was used to teasing, he did not expect this from O'Neal as he had looked up to him and considered him his role model.

However, Binion has a positive outlook despite the abuse, saying that the 'cruel taunts' inspired him to start an anti-bullying campaign called Hug Don't Judge.
