Solar panels return to White House after 32-year hiatus

President Barack Obama is getting new solar panels installed on the White House roof after they were removed 32 years back.

A White House official said the administration started installing "American made" solar panels on the First Family's residence this week.

The move is part of a so-called energy retrofit that also includes better temperature controls and variable speed fans to save power, the New York Daily News reports.

The report said that it is part of the administration's bid to "lead by example" by cutting federal energy use.

Former President Jimmy Carter had solar panels put on the White House after his 1976 election, but Ronald Reagan had them removed in 1981, the report added.
