The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the draft bill to replace two ordinances to bring Jammu and Kashmir at the same level as other states for implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, sources said.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting presided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

President Pranab Mukherjee had earlier this month promulgated two ordinances to extend the domain of Central GST Act and the Integrated GST Act to Jammu and Kashmir from July 8.

The ordinances approved were the Central Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu and Kashmir) Ordinance, 2017 and the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu and Kashmir) Ordinance, 2017.

The Goods and Services Tax was launched in the country from the midnight of July 1 this year. However, due to the special constitutional provisions applicable to Jammu and Kashmir, more steps had to be taken before it could join the GST regime.
