Beijing, April 23 (IANS/EFE) A Beijing court has sentenced a man to 14 months in prison for throwing paint at a famous portrait of Communist leader Mao Zedong.

The sentence, delivered on Wednesday and reported in the official daily Global Times, said the 42-year-old accused had defied the law and caused public disorder with his act.

On March 6, 2014, the man threw a bottle of paint at Mao's portrait, hanging at the entrance to the Forbidden City near Beijing's Tiananmen Square, allegedly to attract attention.

He was arrested by police who then cordoned off the area.

The incident occurred at one of the most popular tourist sites in the Chinese capital, and also one of the most highly monitored and guarded.

Authorities have controlled access to the area, where the offices of China's legislative body are also located, for several years.
