A criminal wanted for murder in Andhra Pradesh was arrested here after a gun battle with security forces, police said on Friday.

Superintendent of Police Akash Tomar said the criminal, Deepak Sharma, and his accomplice were on a motorcycle but did not halt during checking at Kamla Nagar on Thursday night.

When policemen chased them, the criminals opened fire, resulting in a gunfight. While the accomplice escaped, Sharma was overpowered.

Sharma, a resident of Muzaffarnagar, confessed to his involvement in several cases of robbery and murder in Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

He had committed a robbery in the state treasury in Andhra Pradesh in which a security guard was killed. The Andhra Pradesh Police had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for his arrest.

"We are making efforts to arrest the accomplice too," said Tomar.
