This refers to the editorial "The people are supreme" (January 28). For more than two decades, coalition governments have indeed been the norm in India. Pranab Mukherjee was a senior politician till recently. He must know the problems of coalition governments and could have pushed for a reform in the rules of government formation. If there is a fractured electoral verdict, the government should be formed by as many of the largest parties as required. On top of that, a no-confidence motion against the government should be passed by a two-thirds majority. This will enable the formation of a stable coalition government while simultaneously eliminating the possibility of smaller parties wielding disproportionate influence on the government.
