In a bid to raise awareness over the rise in cases of diabetes in the country, the Aligarh Muslim University here has organised a two-km walk, to be led by Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (Rtd) Zameer Uddin Shah, in the campus on May 16.
Following the awareness walk, Shah would attend as the Chief Guest a national seminar, organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology of the University and sponsored by a US-based Trust formed by some AMU alumni.
By the year 2030, India would be having 80 million diabetics, Director of the Centre Jamal Ahmad said, quoting some research estimates.
He said that apart from premature deaths caused by diabetes, people face a risk of physical disability, heart attack, strokes, kidney, eye and nerve diseases.
Jamal, a noted Endocrinologist, said the situation calls for a nation-wide awareness campaign for controlling this disease with the help of better nutrition and regular exercise, especially walking.
He said that the AMU VC was participating in this symbolic walk essentially to highlight the need of a nation-wide mass campaign for combating the onslaught of this "life threatening" disease.
