The rich bio-diversity of islands in Dakshina Kannada district should be conserved, District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai said today.
Inaugurating a programme on Bio-Diversity of Islands, to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, he said that islands were a treasure trove of rich bio-diversity and emphasized the need to create awareness in this regard.
Programmes to educate the people on the rich bio-diversity of islands would be organized, he said.
He regretted that though activities that harm nature are banned on islands, the rules were being violated.
R K Singh, member of the State Bio-Diversity Board, said the Netrani Island had seen much development ever since it was officially declared as a Bio-Diversity spot by the Government a year ago.
He also said there was precious bio-diversity in Sharavathi river valley and measures had to be taken to conserve the river.
