Five persons were killed after being run over by a chemical-laden tanker on GT road in Panipat early today, police said.

The accident took place on the Panipat-Sonipat National Highway near Pasina Modh in Panipat, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Chander Mohan said.

He said a truck, laden with fruits, turned turtle on the road when its driver lost control over the vehicle.

"The driver and conductor of the truck tried to come out of the vehicle by breaking its window panes. A youth on a bike along with two other persons from a nearby roadside dhaba rushed to the spot to help them.

"In the meanwhile, a tanker laden with chemicals passed through the road and hit them. While two persons died at the spot, three succumbed to injuries in the hospital," Mohan said.

Police said a case has been registered and the driver of the tanker has been arrested.
