In an initiative aimed at combating effects of climate change, CPI(M) has asked its members to dig more than 2.5 lakh pits to harvest rainwater for increasing the ground water table in the district.
Under the initiative mooted by the district unit of the party, nearly 40,000 party cadres and members of its allies organisations would put in place the rainwater harvesting pits in the backyard of their houses and in lands owned by them at their own cost.
"We will complete the mission by May 20 before commencement of monsoon. Our aim is to catch the monsoon rains where it falls. Recharging groundwater by harvesting rainwater will help the district to some how adapt to climate change effects," CPI-M District Secretary K N Balagopal, MP, said.

Asked why such a programme was being initiated by a political party, Balagopal, who has been raising the issue of climate changes both inside Parliament and outside, said the issue posed a threat to the humanity and tackling this crisis was the responsibility of each organisation and individual.
The CPI (M) Rajya Sabha member said managing water resources in the landscape would increase vegetation cover which safeguard and generate many ecosystem services for livelihood and economic development of the people.
