The Calcutta University has issued a notification looking for an "outstanding scholar of national and international repute" for appointment of the Mahatma Gandhi Chair professor.

The notification came days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced setting up the chair to commemorate Gandhiji's 150th birth anniversary next year.

The notification sought applications for the Chair professor who will facilitate "eminent scholars on Gandhi to teach and conduct research" on the Father of Nation.

The notification stipulated qualification for the post as "an outstanding scholar of national and international repute, who has a proven track record from the areas of Political Science/History/Philosophy and such other disciplines of Social Sciences as may be required to fulfil the mandate of the Chair."

The period of job will be "initially for one year, which can be extended for another two years," the notification said adding the application for the job should reach the office of Registrar by December 31, 2018.

Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakrabarti Banerjee said, "The notice has been issued to find someone who will fit the bill as Chair Professor and enable eminent scholars on Gandhi to teach and conduct research on his life and work."

The Chair Professor will not be more than 69 years of age.

The CM had announced a Chair in Gandhiji's name at Calcutta University on his birthday October 2, after laying the foundation stone of a new museum complex at the state-acquired Gandhi Bhawan in Beleghata here.
