Decks for setting up the "Maritime Heritage Museum INS Vagli", proposed by the Tamil Nadu Government, have been cleared with the Coastal Regulation Zone Clearance being obtained for towing and hauling of the submarine from Visakhapatnam to Mamallapuram near here.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had last year issued orders for setting up the heritage museum at heritage resort Mamallapuram.
Tourism, Culture and Hindu Religious Endowment Board Principal Secretary R Kannan today chaired the first meeting of the working committee here, on the establishment of the heritage museum, an official release said.
"The meeting was held after obtaining CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) Clearance for towing and hauling of the submarine Vagli at Mammallpuram," the release said.
The vessel was decommissioned in December 2010 after 36 years of service. It was the last of the Foxtrot class, built by USSR.
During the meeting, converting the submarine into heritage museum, setting up artefacts, designs and displays along with sound and light music were discussed, the release said.
The proposed themes to be set for display at the museum would be based on the maritime history of Tamil Nadu from Sangam era till end of 20th century, it said.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation Ltd Managing Director Hemant Kumar Sinha, Commissioner of Museums, P R Sampath, Commodore Amar K Mahadevan, Naval Officer Incharge, Indian Navy, Captain Shyam Sundar, Indian Navy, and senior government officials participated in the meeting, the release added.
