Despite not getting a clearence, the Shiromani Akali Dal-controlled Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee today laid the foundation of a memorial inside the Rakabganj Gurudwara complex here to honour the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The foundation stone-laying function was attended by BJP President Rajnath Singh, leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Sawraj, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar, Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel and SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal among others.
The SGMC went ahead with today's function despite New Delhi Municipal Corporation not giving permission for the project and asking it not to carry out any construction activities at the proposed site.
"The government could not ensure justice to victims of the 1984 riot in the last 28 years. Now, they are opposing construction of a memorial in memory of the victims," DSGMC President Manjit Singh GK said.
