Union Minister Oscar Fernandes today inaugurated ESIC Medical college, built at a cost Rs 750 crore, at Ner chowk near here.

The Union Minister for Labour and Employment also distributed health smart cards to local taxi drivers under the national level free medical scheme for the auto and taxi drivers.

With this card the drivers would get free medical treatment in all ESIC hospitals and dispensaries in the country.

The function was held before the Model Code of Conduct came into force with the announcement of Lok Sabha poll schedule.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Fernandes said that ESIC hospitals were facing shortage of trained staff so ESIC decided to open its own medical college.
 

A total of 30 medical colleges would be opened in the country and at 12 places classes of Post Graduation level would be started.

In the first phase, 17 medical colleges will be opened.

Chief Minister Virbhadara Singh said that with the inauguration of ESIC Medical college the state has three government medical colleges now.

He said that two more medical colleges would be opened in Government sector.
