Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed the authorities concerned to ensure completion of the Assam Gas Cracker Project being set up by Brahmaputra Crackers and Polymers Limited in Dibrugarh.
The project has so far achieved an overall progress of 99.78 per cent and is expected to lay the groundwork for substantial investments to set up a slew of downstream plastic processing industries, the Chief Minister said during a review meeting at Lepetkata in Assam's Dibrugarh district.
The Gas Cracker Project is the first-ever petrochemical one in the North East and an offshoot of the historic Assam Accord signed in August 1985.
Gogoi said that since the project carries historical importance, it should work towards fulfilling the dreams of the people of the North East and improve its economy.
He said 136 plastic processing industries have been identified across the region as the offshoot of the Gas Cracker Project, which is expected to create job opportunities for the local youth.
Gogoi also spoke of a joint venture between the Assam government and BCPL harnessing the benefits of downstream industries to solve the unemployment problem.
