Gogoi lays foundation stone of Assam state war memorial

Foundation stone was today laid for a state war memorial here which would soon come up in the state capital to honour martyrs of the 17th century Ahom Kingdom in Assam, the World War-II and other recent wars.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today laid foundation stone of the Rs 7.50 crore memorial to be constructed on the north bank of historic Dighalipukhuri tank, an official release said.

This memorial will blend with the overall beautification plan of the tank, the release said.

Care has been taken so that no trees are cut or the water body disturbed by the memorial that will depict the famous battle of Saraighat, where Ahom kingdom commander Lachit Borphukan led the charge in the 1671 battle that thwarted the attempt by Mughal forces to invade the state.
 

Stating that three panels would depict the period of World War-II, recent wars and the Mughal period, the release said this would be a landmark and a major tourist spot.
