The Centre wants industry to consider more women apprenticeships to increase the skilled workforce of women in the country.
"Given that only 2 per cent of women population in the country are part of the skilled workforce, we are also keen that the establishments consider taking more women in their Apprenticeship programmes," dy DG (Apprentice Training), Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship T C Saravanabava said at a CII-organised event.
He said government was keen that more young men and women receive on-the-job training on the shop floors of established organisations and become part of the skilled workforce.
The Centre's plan to bear 50 per cent of the stipend cost for each of the apprentices, will help towards creating jobs, a CII release said.
The minimum monthly stipend for trade apprentices, which has been linked to minimum wages of a semi-skilled worker, starts at 70 per cent of minimum wages in the first year, 80 per cent in the second and 90 per cent in the third and fourth year.
