The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is going to celebrate 'Geoscience Week' starting tomorrow till March 4, its foundation day, at its central headquarters here in the city.
The event would witness a plethora of activities to showcase GSI's inherent capabilities, new initiatives and Research and Development (R&D) services in an open forum.
The GSI, conceived in 1836, to identify Coal Resources for steam navigation and railways, was established in 1851 by Sir Thomas Oldham and currently has 36 establishments in the country.

Incidentally, GSI is the world's second oldest geo-scientific organisation with the strength of more than 12,000 employees including over 4,000 Group A scientists and technologists and around 3,500 in the Group B scientist category.
The GSI is primarily engaged in unearthing country's natural mineral resources and carries out R&D activities in all facets of geosciences. It undertakes geo-scientific studies in all three spheres - Land, Air and Ocean.
