HC closes contempt plea against Principal Home Secretary

Madras High Court Bench here today closed a contempt petition seeking to punish concerned state officials for failure to fill vacancies of director and deputy directors of prosecution posts.

The petition was closed by Justices N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice P Devadass after recording the submission of Additional Advocate General K Chellapandian that the Chief Justice of the High Court had given consent to the list forwarded by the government and orders of appointment would be passed within two weeks.

Petitioner K R Ramaswamy alias Traffic Ramaswamy had sought to punish Principal Secretary of Home Niranjan Mardi and former Home Secretary S Rajagopal for failing to appoint director and deputy directors of Prosecution as per the court's orders issued on November 26, 2009.
 

The Judges said that during the pendency of the case, the Principal Secretary had taken speedy action to fill up the vacancies in accordance with Section 25-A of the Criminal Procedure Code and a list of persons, possessing the requisite qualifications, had been sent to the Chief Justice, who gave his approval on August 16.
