Five people were arrested
early Monday and 116 litres of illicit liquor and 10 litres of spirit seized from them on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, police said.
The demand for illicit liquor was increasing following closure of the government-run TASMAC liquor outlets due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
Based on information that illicit liquor was being brewed in the area coming under Manjoor limits in Nilgiris district, a police team raided the place.
They seized the liquor and spirit and other materials required for brewing and arrested the five.
Cases under various sections, including Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act read with IPC 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), have been registered against the accused.
The accused were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody, the police said.
