An Indian-origin police officer in Malaysia has been put on the wanted list for the custodial death of a 32-year-old ethnic Indian man here.

N Dharmendran died on May 21 while he was detained at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters. He had complained of chest pain and was sent to a city hospital but died on arrival.

Police inspector Hare Krishna Subramaniam, sought in connection with custodial death of Dhamendran, has been placed on the wanted list, City Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Ku Chin Wah said.

He said Subramaniam was sought by police for not showing up for work since June 15.

"He is also wanted in connection with the death of Dhamendran," Wah was quoted as saying by Malaysia's Star newspaper today.

In early June, three policemen were charged in a magistrate's court here with causing the death of lock-up detainee Dhamendran.

Sjn Jaffri Jaafar, 44, Kpl Nahar Abdul Rahman, 45, and Kpl Haswadi Zamri Shaari, 32, confirmed that they understood the charges read to them. No plea was recorded.

Subramaniam has been on the run since the police launched investigations into the case.
