Indian-Chinese-origin lawmaker Indranee Rajah has been promoted as a Cabinet minister in Singapore in a reshuffle by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today.
The reshuffle aims to give the younger generation of politicians exposure in government affairs.
Rajah, the daughter of senior police officer A T Rajah and an ethnic Chinese mother of Anglican faith, is the third woman to be made a full minister in the Cabinet.
The other two are Culture Minister Grace Fu and Manpower Minister Josephine Teo.
Rajah, 55, will be a minister in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), as well as second minister for finance and education.
The new appointments announced today are effective from May 1.
S Iswaran, a veteran in handling India-Singapore bilateral ties, will be appointed minister for communications and information.
Indian-origin Iswaran will continue in the ministry of trade and industry but will be redesignated as minister-in-charge of trade relations.
Janil Puthucheary, also an Indian-origin Malaysian but naturalised Singaporean, will be appointed senior minister of state (SMS) in the transport ministry.
Parliamentary Secretary Amrin Amin, 40, will also be promoted and continue in the ministries of health and home affairs.
