Janmashtami, Lord Krishna's birthday was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety across Madhya Pradesh including at the 'Ram-Janki' temple in Bandhavgarh fort.

The fort is situated on a mountain deep inside world famous Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

"The fort is open only once in a year for devotees on the occasion of Janmashtmi festival in which large number of persons will take part. A mela was also organised on the day at the site," former MLA and erstwhile Kiledar (man appointed by Royals for protecting the fort) Narendra Pratap Singh told PTI.

While usually people form human pyramids to break an earthen pot, at Bandhavgarh people have to scale a mountain through 8-km long trek having thick population of wild animals specially tigers to reach at the temple and take part in a fair.

Singh said, "the fort had a rich history and it was believed that Lord Ram had gifted it to his younger brother Laxman after returning from forest and therefore, the area was named as Bandhavgarh -- Fort of Brother."

He said that Janmashtmi was celebrated here with traditional fervor from the time of erstwhile Rewa kingdom when Bandhavgarh was the capital of that state.
