Disagreeing with ex-servicemen who had threatened to return their JNU degrees last week amid a controversy over an event held on the campus against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, retired Lt Colonel Sura Singh has said he will not join former colleagues.

"I am an ex-Indian Army officer and I have a bachelors degree from JNU which I am not going to return. Arresting JNU students union president was highly improper. I stand besides the protesting students fighting for the university," Lt Colonel (Retd) Sura Singh, who is now based in Los Angeles said in a communication to university.

"Delhi Police Chief is trying to make a post retirement career our of this incident at the cost of JNU students and their future. His conduct in this regard was highly unprincipled," he alleged in the letter.

The ex-servicemen of 54th NDA course had yesterday written to the Vice Chancellor Jagdesh Kumar saying they "find it difficult" to be associated with an institution that has become a "hub of anti-national activities".

"We feel that present activities in JNU campus negate the sacrifices made by past degree holders of the university and would therefore want to return our prized and well earned degrees to your institution if such activities are allowed to be conducted inside the university campus," they had said.

Students and teachers of various educational institutions have been demanding release of JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar who was arrested last week in a sedition case that was registered following an event on the varsity campus to protest against the hanging of Afzal Guru where anti-India slogans were allegedly raised.
