Venezuela's chief prosecutor is investigating the murder of an opposition politician who was gunned down just two weeks before municipal elections take place nationwide.

A gunman riding on the back of a motorcycle fired shots and killed Jose Chirinos Tuesday night as the city council candidate was departing a radio station following an interview in the western town of Mene Grande. A radio announcer accompanying the candidate was also wounded.

The motive behind the attack is unclear. Congressman Enrique Marquez, who is a member of Chirinos' party, told The Associated Press he was unaware of any threats against the candidate's life.

The opposition alliance led by former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles condemned the slaying and called for a full investigation.
