Police has arrested manager of an orphanage in Ganjam district on charges of sexually abusing minor girls.

40-year-old Upendra Dash from Samastipur in Bihar was arrested on Tuesday night, Inspector In-Charge of Dhanupali police station Pranakrushna Rout said today.

The orphanage at Naxalpaly has been closed and 20 children moved to another home following complaints that Dash sexually abused minor girls.

The accused was produced in court yesterday which sent him to judicial custody.

The victims were sent for medical examination, police said.

Dash had allegedly raped two minor girls and molested others at the orphanage during the last one month, he said.

Rout said the victims, aged between eight and 12 years, narrated their ordeal of sexual abuse and molestation to the police officials.

The whereabouts of a woman, believed to be from Punjab who had left the orphanage a month ago and who Dash claimed was his wife, were being ascertained, Rout said.

Earlier, senior officials including the district collector and superintendent of police went to the orphanage to verify the allegations against Dash.
