Punjab unit of Congress today alleged that the state Health Minister Madan Mohan Mittal's recent mass transfers of doctors are adversely affecting the health services in the rural areas of the state.
Sukhjinder Raj Singh Majithia said that the state government failed to provide proper health services to its people, adding that the recent move of mass transfers of doctors from the community health centres is one such instance.
"In one stroke, out of 180 community health centres in Punjab, Mittal has withdrawn health specialists from 80 community health centres (CHC) predominantly from rural and backward areas."
"Out of nearly 1,100 health specialists, Mittal has transferred 534," he said and described the minister's step as "autocratic".
He said that the state government does not have sufficient specialists to man 180 community health centres.
The Congress leader said that such transfer policies meted out undue harassment to the doctors, leading to start their own private clinics.
He appealed to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to intervene into the matter and take necessary steps in this regard.
