Odisha continues to reel under sweltering heat with nine places including state capital recording temperature above 40 degree Celsius today despite onset of monsoon in the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heat wave in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khurda, Angul, Bolangir and Kalahandi during next 48 hours.
The nine places which recorded temperature above 40 degree Celsius are - Talcher (40.8), Chandbali (40.3), Cuttack (40), Bhubaneswar(40.2), Angul (40.9), Baripada (41.4), Bhawanipatna (40.5), Bolangir (40.3) and Titlagarh, the IMD said.
The Regional Meteorological Department in Bhubaneswar attributed the sudden rise in temperature to "weakened monsoon force."
Though the monsoon reached Odisha on June 8 and caused rainfall in many places, the temperature has suddenly increased as the monsoon weakened only after three days.
Meanwhile, the state government extended the summer vacation in schools by three more days. While the schools were earlier scheduled to open on June 18, now it will reopen on June 21 in view of the prevailing heatwave condition, said School and Mass Education secretary P K Mohapatra.
