As many as 389 violations by jewellery outlets and 181 by retailers of Legal Metrology Act and Packaged Commodities Rules were detected during state-wide inspections carried out by labour authorities.

While inspections in 1,176 jewellery shops led to detection of 389 violations of the Act, 1632 such searches in retail outlets including textiles, bakeries and sweet shops showed 181 instances of contravention of PC Rules, a Tamil Nadu government release here said.

Contraventions by jewelleries include unstamped weights and non-display of verification certificates.

The weights should be properly stamped by the stamping inspectors according to Legal Metrology Act, an official said Friday.

As regards retail outlets, violations include aspects like non-declaration of manufacturer's name, consumer care contact number, generic name of the commodity and date of packing and excessive Maximum Retail Price.

Steps are being taken to collect fine for the violations by jewellers and other retailers as well.

The action, aimed at protecting consumer interests is done under the provisions of L M Act, 2009 and The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.

Consumers can lodge complaints relating to violations of L M Act and Packaged Commodities Rules through 'TN-LMCTS' mobile app introduced by the State Labour Department.
