Pakistan President Arif Alvi has instructed officials of the foreign and interior ministries to resolve the issue of the nationality of a "stateless" five-month old baby girl who is fighting a life-threatening heart disease in the UAE, his office said on Wednesday.

The story of the "stateless" baby was published last month in a Gulf newspaper, which reported that the father of the girl is a British national while her mother is a Pakistani national and the baby herself was born in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE.

The baby is not considered a citizen by either of her parent's home countries, and hence unable to get a passport.

The father approached the Pakistani Embassy in the UAE to get a passport for her daughter as her mother is a citizen of Pakistan. However, the embassy told him that only father of a child can apply for a passport according to the Pakistani laws.

Taking notice of the story, President Alvi "instructed the Foreign Office to look into the matter in order to resolve the issue."

After his intervention, the foreign ministry in collaboration with interior ministry is working to resolve the question of identity of the baby, according to his office.
