A gas leak from an oil tanker has caused panic among the people who have been fleeing their houses at Angrabhasa along the National Highway 31 in Jalpaiguri district today.

Many locals have left their houses after the gas started leaking at about 3 AM from the tanker on the national highway, District Magistrate Mukta Arya said.

Electricity was cut off in the area as preventive measure and efforts were on to cap the leak, she said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the highway and road communication between the Dooars and Assam and Bhutan was snapped.

A police force was deployed in the area.
