A 24-year-old police constable, who was a former Maoist, was today killed by Naxals at a village in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Rajnandgaon district, police said.

Lal Sai, who had joined the police force after quitting Naxalism, was shot dead in the wee hours by a group of armed rebels at Konde-Markeli village under Manpur police station limits, a senior police official told PTI.

Sai was posted at Manpur police station.

The constable had dropped his wife at her parents' place in Konde-Markeli, located around 14 km from Manpur, yesterday morning and again went to the village in the evening after his duty, the official said.

As per preliminary information, when all the family members, including Sai, were sleeping, some armed Naxals stormed the house of his in-laws at around midnight and pumped bullets into him before fleeing from the place, he said.

Security personnel rushed to the spot and launched a combing operation in the region, about 150 km from here, to nab the attackers, he said, adding the constable'sbody was brought to Rajanandgaon for autopsy.

Sai, who was an active cadre of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), had surrendered before police two years back and since then was working as an assistant constable with Rajnandgaon police.

He was elevated as constable in March this year because of his dedication and good work, the official said.
