In a homage to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat today said he will always be recalled as the father of India's IT revolution, who helped place the country among developed and powerful nations of the world.

Addressing a programme organised by the PCC's Panchayati Raj Department and IT Cell to mark the occasion, Rawat said Rajiv Gandhi will always be remembered by the future generations as the father of India's IT revolution.

Rajiv Gandhi, who heralded the information and communication technology revolution in the country, was born on August 20, 1944 and served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989.

"It was he (Rajiv Gandhi) who initiated the IT revolution and catapulted the country among the strong and developed nations of the world. He made the supreme sacrifice to protect the country's unity and integrity," Rawat said.

The chief minister also remembered the former prime minister for his role in strengthening the Panchayati Raj institutions and granting voting rights to the youth to strengthen the democratic institutions in the country.

The process to cement ties with neighbouring contries was also begun by Rajiv Gandhi, he said, adding, it was the "result of the former prime minister's efforts" that the world is today looking upon India as an emerging super power.
