Gusty winds coupled with rain swept the plains while snowfall hit isolated places in the hills across Uttarakhand on Friday intensifying cold conditions.

The week-long dry weather had made it seem winter was on its way out. However, many places in the plains awoke to early morning drizzle and chill on Friday.

Almost all places in the plains including Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh have been lashed by rains since morning while snowfall was recorded at isolated places including Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Surkanda Devi, Dhanolti near Mussoorie and parts of Nainital district at a height of 3,000 metres and above, Meteorological Office Director Vikram Singh said.

Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail till Saturday evening, he said.

The weather largely followed the department alert about heavy rainfall at isolated places especially in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Almora, Haridwar, Udhamsingh Nagar and Nainital districts.

Strong winds and rain re-intensified cold conditions which had begun to ebb with dry weather prevailing in the region for nearly a week.

Dehradun recorded a minimum temperature of 13.4 degrees Celsius followed by Pantnagar which recorded a minimum of 13.9 degrees Celsius. Mukteshwar registered a minimum of 3.2 degrees Celsius and New Tehri 7.2 degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said.
