Tanneries operational in Kanpur despite CPCB's notice

A week after the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) issued a notice for shutting down six tanneries here for spreading pollution and violating rules, the proceedings for their closure are yet to be initiated.

The Regional Pollution Control Board claims it is yet to receive CPCB's written order and hence the delay.

"We are yet to receive any order to seal the tanneries. We did receive an order earlier but it had some shortcomings and that is why the tanneries haven't been sealed yet," said in-charge of the Kanpur regional centre Mohd Sikander.

CPCB had issued notice to the Kanpur centre on July 27 to shut 13 tanneries including six from Jajmau and seven from Unnav and other areas, where a lot of irregularities were found during CPCB's raid in May earlier this year.

During the raid it was found that these tanneries did not have common effluent treatment plant (CETP), online monitoring system and cream recovery plant.

Citing these shortcomings, the order to shut the 13 tanneries was issued.

When questioned, the district administrators said that Kanpur regional centre had failed to intimate them about the CPCB's order.

"The Kanpur regional centre has not yet informed the district administration about CPCB's order to shut down the tanneries. We will investigate the matter," said Kanpur DM Raj Sharma.
