Theft accused ends life in lockup; magisterial probe ordered

A 32-year-old man accused of theft allegedly committed suicide in police custody at Naugaon police station in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, police said today.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Lalit Shakyawar, accused Sunil Vishwakarma was detained on the charges of theft and kept in the police custody during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

"This morning, he was found hanging in the bathroom of the lockup. He used the woollen threads of the blanket to hang self in the bathroom," he said.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident and two police constables--- Abhishek Shamele and Rajkumar -have been suspended for negligence in duty.
 

Shakyawar said that Vishwakarma was detained from the house of a local Brijesh Mishra.

Police had reached to Mishra's residence after receiving a phone call from him that a thief had crept into his residence.

Shakyawar informed that the body of Vishwakarma was handed over to the family members after the post-mortem.

"A report of the incident has been submitted to the MP Human Rights Commission," he added.
