A 36-year-old undertrial was today shot dead in a police van on the national highway on the outskirts of the town here by some unidentified armed miscreants when he was being taken to jail after hearing in the court, police said.

Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha Kahlwan was shot dead by unspecified number of armed miscreants, who came on two cars, attacked the police van in which Sukha was being taken back to the high-security Nabha jail in Patiala district after being presented in a Jalandhar court in connection with a case.

The miscreants first deflated the rear tyre of police van with a shot and then burst volley of fires at Sukha, police said.

Several shots were fired and Sukha died on spot, police said adding that miscreants sped away in their cars after the incident.

Sukha was wanted in many cases and was locked in Nabha jail these days.

Police did not ruled out Sukha's murder owing to an old gang rivalry.

The incident took place near a public school across village Chachoki on NH 1, police said, adding that probe was under progress.
