Six local commissioners appointed by the National Green Tribunal will visit different places in the capital to check whether all entry points for heavy vehicles have requisite infrastructure to check pollution levels, overloading and age of vehicle entering Delhi.

Delhi has more than 100 entry points for commercial vehicles but most of the trucks use NH 24, DND, Kalindi Kunj, Badarpur Border, NH 8 and GT Karnal Road for entry into the capital.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swantanter Kumar which yesterday banned all diesel vehicles more than 10 years old, appointed advocates Amit Verma, Aditya N Prasad, Neha Miriam Kurian, Atif Suhrawaroy, Sahil Sangar and Pallavi Talware as local commissioners in the matter.

"It is reported that as many as 80,000 trucks enter Delhi every night and sleeping population is compelled to inhale high particulate matters resulting in serious health hazards as diesel fuel can damage the lungs, brain and even cause cancer," the bench had noted.

The tribunal ordered the local commissioners to visit all the check points of Delhi on April 9 and report to it for compliance of the directions.

"All authorities particularly the police are directed to provide police help to enable the commissioners to execute the commission. The report shall be submitted to the tribunal on April 10, 2015 and shall also include status of installation of weigh bridges and providing of u-turn for the vehicles which are overloaded and polluting," the bench said.

It also asked all the registering authorities in Haryana, UP and NCT, Delhi to not register any diesel vehicle which is more than 10 years old and shall file the list of vehicles before the tribunal and provide the same to the police and other authorities concerned.
