Sri Lanka's new government has ordered the police to reinvestigate some high-profile cases, including the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks and the 2005 murder of a Tamil minority community journalist.
The ruling National People's Power, which won the presidential election last month, pledged to reinvestigate past cases which had not been resolved.
The Ministry of Public Security took action to identify any lapses in investigations.
The ministry has asked the acting police chief that these cases should be reinvestigated," Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said on Saturday.
The cases to be reinvestigated include the alleged scam in the issue of Central Bank bonds in 2015 blamed on the then government of Ranil Wickremesinghe, the former president, and the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks that killed over 270 people, including 11 Indians.

IPO-bound Hyundai Motor India Ltd will explore opportunities for exporting its upcoming electric vehicles from the country to other similar markets to enhance its position as a production hub for emerging markets, according to a senior company official.
The company is lining up four electric vehicles to be launched in future, including the electric version of its popular SUV Creta by Q4 FY25, in the mass and 'mass premium' segments.
"We are a very strong production hub for emerging markets.  We are exporting to 80 plus countries. As far as EVs are concerned, it will, of course, depend on the demand but we are always open to look at any product, which we introduce in India, for exporting it to the other market as well," Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) COO Tarun Garg told PTI.

Textile manufacturer Alok Industries on Monday said its consolidated net loss widened to Rs 262.10 crore for the second quarter ended September 2024.
The company had posted a net loss of Rs 174.83 crore in the July-September period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing from Alok Industries, jointly owned by Reliance Industries and JM Financial Asset Reconstruction.
Its revenue from operation fell 35.46 per cent to Rs 885.66 crore during the period under review. It was Rs 1,372.34 crore in the corresponding period a year ago.
The total expenses in the September quarter declined 25.45 per cent to Rs 1,160.63
Alok Industries' total income, including other income, was down 34.97 per cent to Rs 898.78 crore in the September quarter.
Reliance Industries owns a 40.01 per cent stake and 34.99 per cent by JM Financial Asset Reconstruction Company in Alok Industries, which operates in-home textiles, cotton yarn, apparel fabric, garments, and polyester yarn.

The government on Sunday imposed import curbs on parts of pocket lighters with immediate effect, a move which would help encourage domestic manufacturing and cut dependence on their inbound shipments from China.
"Import of parts of pocket lighters, gas fuelled, non-refillable or refillable lighters (cigarette lighters)... is restricted with immediate effect," the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
Imports of cigarette lighters, priced less than Rs 20, are already prohibited. The import ban is also there on pocket lighters, gas-fuelled, non-refillable or refillable.
Last year, the government also issued mandatory quality standard norms for flame-producing lighters with a view to contain import of sub-standard goods and boost domestic manufacturing.
Items under the quality control orders (QCO), cannot be produced, sold/traded, imported and stocked unless they bear the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) mark.
