Cotton traders are staring at excess stock, as supplies from the world's biggest growing regions such as India and the US are set to rise amid declining demand from China, a major importer of the commodity. The fall in Chinese demand has been so sharp that it will result in less planting of the crop in FY16. However, there will still be a glut of cotton in the market. In 2011-12, Chinese imports doubled from the previous season to 5.3 million tonnes. This is expected to be 1.6 million tonnes in 2014-15. According to an International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) report, cotton planting in 2015-16 is expected be much lower and global crop could be 8.5 per cent lower at 23.9 million tonnes. However, global consumption is expected to increase 2.33 per cent to 24.93 million tonnes. In a recent analysis, Rabo Bank said world cotton consumption would exceed production by six million bales (of 170 kg each). The Baltic Dry Index, a composite index that measures different sizes of dry bulk carriers and a major indicator of trade, is down 40 per cent after posting losses for 20 straight days - its longest losing streak since August 2012. Amidst reports of fall in cotton sowing this season, cotton textiles mills and even spinners are waiting to stock the fiber because they feel that ample cotton will be available and at a much cheaper rate when new crop arrives couple of months later. They have a reason to hope as internationally cotton prices are at five year low. International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) said in its report that, "although the monsoon arrived in India, the volume of precipitation has varied widely and yield is likely to suffer in some places." The global cotton body has put India's total crop of cotton by around 10 per cent lower. ICAC and USDA have put India's total cotton crop in 14-15 slightly above 35 million bales. However ICAC reports talks to drastic fall in exports of cotton from India in 14-15, "driven mainly by a 26% fall in imports by Chinato 2.2 million tons.
