Bangladesh vs Afghanistan HIGHLIGHTS Asia Cup 2025: BAN keep Super 4 hopes alive; beat AFG by 8 runs

Bangladesh survived a late scare to secure a narrow 8-run win over Afghanistan and keep their Super Four hopes alive in the Asia Cup 2025. After a shaky batting effort, Bangladesh’s bowlers and fielders stepped up in the second innings to defend a modest total of 154.

Taskin Ahmed bowled a brilliant final over with Afghanistan needing 22 runs. He conceded only 13, picking up the final wicket of Noor Ahmad, who had threatened to pull off a miracle with two sixes in the last over. Noor was eventually caught at long-off, sparking wild celebrations from Bangladesh and visible frustration from Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan, who was seen fuming and engaging in a tense exchange with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and one of the umpires.

Mustafizur Rahman’s earlier spell was crucial, especially in the 19th over where he took two wickets in two balls — dismissing Rashid Khan and AM Ghazanfar — to shift momentum. His final figures were 4-0-28-3. Taskin, too, finished with 4-0-34-2, including the match-winning final over.

Despite a late flourish from Rashid Khan (20 off 11) and Noor Ahmad (14 off 9), Afghanistan were always just behind in the chase. They had needed 31 off the last three overs and started the final six balls requiring 22. Noor hit two sixes, but the lack of support from the tail and disciplined bowling proved decisive.

Earlier, Afghanistan had crumbled to 27/2 in the powerplay, courtesy of Nasum Ahmed, who ended with an exceptional 4-1-11-2. Rishad Hossain’s leg-spin was also key, taking 2-18 in his four overs. The fifth bowler’s quota, shared by Shamim Hossain and Saif Hassan, proved costly as they gave away 55 runs in 4 overs, which almost came back to haunt Bangladesh.

Afghanistan’s middle-order tried to revive the chase, with Azmatullah Omarzai striking 30 off 16 and Gulbadin Naib scoring 16 off 14. However, crucial wickets at regular intervals and a lack of partnerships ultimately led to their downfall.

With this result, Bangladesh stayed alive in the tournament, while Afghanistan’s path to the Super Fours now depends on other results and net run rate.
