India held their nerve in a dramatic Super Over finish to edge past Sri Lanka in a high-scoring thriller at the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 stage in Dubai. After both teams finished tied at 202 apiece in their respective 20 overs, the match went into a Super Over where Arshdeep Singh’s sensational bowling and Suryakumar Yadav’s calm finish sealed the win for India.
Sri Lanka’s fiery start, Nissanka leads the charge
Put into bat, India put on a stellar batting display in their last Super 4 fixture of the Asia Cup 2025, racking up a commanding total of 202/5 against Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. It’s the first time any team had crossed the 200-run mark in this year’s tournament.
Opener Abhishek Sharma was once again the star at the top, blasting his third straight half-century and giving India early momentum. He and Suryakumar Yadav shared a quickfire 50-run partnership before both were dismissed shortly after the powerplay.
Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma then picked up the pace, keeping the scoreboard ticking with another crucial 50+ stand. Tilak held the innings together till the end with a composed knock, while Axar Patel added some fireworks in the final overs to help India breach the 200-run mark.
Sri Lanka were sharp in the field, pulling off a few tight stops, but their bowling lacked consistency—especially in the death overs—allowing India to finish strong.
With a massive total on the board, India will now focus on fine-tuning their bowling ahead of the final, while Sri Lanka face an uphill battle in what is now a dead rubber.
In reply, Sri Lanka came out all guns blazing. Despite losing Kusal Mendis for a golden duck in the first over, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera counter-attacked fiercely. Nissanka smashed a career-best 107 off just 58 balls – the highest score by a Sri Lankan batter against India in T20Is – and brought up his half-century in just 25 balls. The duo added 127 runs for the second wicket, the third-highest T20I partnership for Sri Lanka.
However, once Perera fell and wickets began to tumble, India pulled things back through tight spells from Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy. Sri Lanka needed 12 off the last over and managed 11, taking the match into a Super Over.
Arshdeep delivers in the Super Over
India trusted Arshdeep Singh to bowl the Super Over, and the left-arm pacer delivered under pressure. He dismissed Kusal Perera on the very first ball and conceded just two runs in total, also removing Shanaka with a smart wide yorker.
Chasing three, Suryakumar Yadav punched Hasaranga’s first delivery through the covers for three runs, sealing the win with four balls to spare. His calm approach under pressure highlighted India’s depth and composure in crunch moments.
India remain unbeaten in Super 4
This win keeps India unbeaten in the Super 4 stage, further strengthening their case for a spot in the final. While Sri Lanka will rue missed chances—especially their fielding lapses in the final over and miscalculated run in the Super Over—the thrilling contest will go down as one of the most memorable games in Asia Cup history.
With form and momentum on their side, India look well on course for another Asia Cup final appearance.
