With the help of a brilliant 53 from skipper Salman Agha followed by clinical performances from the bowlers, Pakistan thrashed Afghanistan by 39 runs in the first T20 of the UAE Tri-Series to kick off their Asia Cup 2025 preparation in style. Pakistan will now face hosts UAE on Saturday with hopes of keeping their winning streak intact in the tournament.
Earlier, Pakistan skipper Salman Agha won the toss and opted to bat first. His decision was proved right by opener Sahibzada Farhan, who scored 21 off just 10 balls before losing his wicket to Azmatullah Omarzai in the third over. But despite the wicket, Pakistan continued to march ahead with Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman in the middle as they finished the powerplay at 54 for 1 on the board.
But Rashid and Nabi struck in back-to-back overs after the powerplay to remove Saim Ayub (14) and Fakhar Zaman (20) as Pakistan were reduced to 63 for 3. Fareed Ahmad then removed Hasan Nawaz (9) to keep Afghanistan ahead. Mohammad Nawaz (21) then added 53 runs for the fifth wicket with skipper Salman Agha before being dismissed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Meanwhile, skipper Salman Agha completed his fifty off 33 balls to keep Pakistan fighting in the match. Mohammad Haris (15) lost his wicket in the final over, but skipper Salman Agha’s unbeaten 53 and Faheem Ashraf’s (12) late fury helped Pakistan finish at 182 for 7 after 20 overs.
In reply, Afghanistan lost their first wicket cheaply after Shaheen Afridi dismissed Ibrahim Zadran for just 9 in the third over. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (38) stuck around for a while before losing his wicket to Mohammad Nawaz.
Sadiq Atal (23) tried to keep his team afloat but lost his wicket to Haris Rauf, who in the same over dismissed Karim Janat (0) as Afghanistan quickly found themselves on the back foot. Sufiyan Muqeem then removed Darwish Rasooli (21) to reduce Afghanistan from 93 for 2 to 93 for 5 in the span of 7 balls.
Azmatullah Omarzai (0) was the next batter to depart as Afghanistan slipped to 95 for 6. Sufiyan then struck again to remove Mohammad Nabi (3), putting Pakistan in full control of the game. Skipper Rashid Khan (39) then played a brilliant cameo to take the match close but lost his wicket to Haris Rauf.
Shaheen Afridi castled Mujeeb Ur Rahman (4) next to push Afghanistan on the verge of an all-out. Finally, Haris Rauf removed Fareed Ahmad (1) to end Afghanistan’s innings on 143 and hand his team a 39-run victory.
