Despite England’s strong fightback with three wickets in the post-lunch session, India have managed to keep themselves in the driving seat by adding another 105 runs in the second session of Day 3. They now lead in the second innings by 261 runs, which is more than the highest successful chase made in a Test at this venue in the last 100 years. The highest chase at the Oval in the last century is 253 by West Indies in 1963.

Pure dominance from India in morning session

The morning session of the day started with India resuming their second innings at 75 for 2 with Yashasvi Jaiswal (51* not out) and Akash Deep (4* not out) still at the crease. The batting duo wasted no time and took the fight straight to the English bowlers, taking only five overs to push India’s total past the 100-run mark. They continued to march ahead with calculative strokes to complete the half-century stand for the third wicket.

England had the chance to get the breakthrough twice in the same over against Akash Deep, but the batter first survived an LBW appeal due to the umpire’s call, then his catch was dropped in the slips the very next ball. He took full advantage of the lifeline given to him and went on to score his maiden Test fifty in 72 balls to keep India rolling.

Meanwhile, England looked completely off the mark, bowling short balls to Akash Deep, while he was clearly struggling against fuller-length deliveries. Even the commentators on the JioStar broadcast team called this out, saying, “This is what happens when you go to Plan B without fully utilising Plan A.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal (84* not out) and Akash Deep (66) then completed their 100-run stand for the third wicket before Akash Deep finally lost his wicket just before the lunch break, as India finished the session with 114 runs at the loss of one wicket.

Shared Second session

England started the second session in the best possible way as Gus Atkinson, on the very first ball of the session, got Indian skipper Shubman Gill (11) LBW to remove the fourth Indian wicket in the innings. But the 23-year-old southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal did not let that shift the momentum away from India as he went on to complete his 6th Test ton in style, keeping India ahead in the match and rebuilding the innings confidently.

But once again, Gus Atkinson came out as England’s saviour and removed Karun Nair (17) to send half of the Indian side back to the pavilion. Yashasvi Jaiswal (118) continued to keep the scoreboard ticking, adding another 44-run stand for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja before losing his wicket to Josh Tongue.

However, Ravindra Jadeja (26* not out), along with Dhruv Jurel (25* not out), helped India avoid any further damage as they added 115 runs in the session for three wickets, taking their second-innings total to 304 for 6 and extending their lead to 281 runs.
