Siraj strikes at late as England close on 50/1 in chase of 374
A moment of brilliance from Mohammed Siraj brought India a crucial breakthrough off the last ball of Day 3, as Zak Crawley was bowled for 14, ending a promising 50-run opening stand for England in their chase of 374 at The Oval.
Siraj, who had been probing with sharp movement throughout the evening, set Crawley up with a field for short-pitched bowling but delivered a searing yorker that snuck under the bat to hit the base of off stump. Crawley, caught on the crease, failed to bring his bat down in time as Siraj celebrated with his trademark leap and outstretched arms.
Earlier, openers Crawley and Ben Duckett had looked largely in control on a surface offering less bite than the first two days. Duckett led the charge with a confident 34*, playing fluent strokes despite being struck on the fingers by Prasidh Krishna during a testing spell.
The wicket shifted momentum slightly in India’s favour, with England closing at 50 for 1. With 324 more runs needed and nine wickets in hand, Day 4 promises high drama as both teams eye a series-defining result.

5th Test Day 3 | ENG vs IND LIVE SCORE UPDATES: Duckett, Crawley keep England steady at 42/0 in 10 overs
England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley made a solid start in their fourth-innings chase of 374, guiding the visitors to 42 for no loss after 10 overs on Day 3 at The Oval. Duckett looked the more aggressive of the two, reaching 28 off 36 balls, while Crawley remained cautious on 13 off 25.
Mohammed Siraj and debutant Akash Deep bowled with intent, extracting occasional seam movement and bounce. Siraj, who replaced Prasidh Krishna in the attack, induced a couple of edges and nearly dismissed Duckett with a ball that rolled back dangerously close to the stumps. Duckett, however, responded with a couple of crisp boundaries — one down the ground and another off a thick edge that flew past gully.
Akash Deep was tidy at the other end, troubling Crawley with a sharp bouncer and some late movement. Despite a few close calls, the English openers managed to see off the new ball without damage.
With the pitch easing and movement less pronounced than in the first innings, the visitors have laid a stable foundation in their pursuit of a record target at The Oval. India will now look to break this opening stand early.

5th Test Day 3 | ENG vs IND LIVE SCORE UPDATES: England 27-0 after 5 Overs
England began their daunting fourth-innings chase of 374 with composure on Day 3 at The Oval, reaching 27 for no loss in 5 overs. Openers Zak Crawley (13)* and Ben Duckett (13)* negotiated the early overs confidently, despite lively spells from Indian pacers Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna.
India opted for a surprise opening attack, handing the new ball to Prasidh instead of Mohammed Siraj. Akash Deep, in his first Test, bowled a probing line and even struck Crawley painfully on the forearm, but the batter continued unflustered. The Indian seamers extracted bounce and movement, but Crawley and Duckett countered with discipline and calculated strokeplay.
Duckett was particularly lucky when an edge off Prasidh flew safely past mid-off, but he also punished wayward deliveries with two boundaries off his hips. Crawley played a punchy square cut for four and survived a hostile spell, even as a sharp bouncer caught him off guard.
Notably, the pair of Duckett and Crawley crossed 1,000 partnership runs against India, becoming only the second opening duo to do so after West Indies' Greenidge and Haynes. With a record chase ahead, England’s steady start has laid a crucial foundation.

5th Test Day 3 | ENG vs IND LIVE SCORE UPDATES: India bowled out for 396; Tongue takes fifer
Washington Sundar’s spirited counterattack came to an end on Day 3 at The Oval, as England bowler Josh Tongue claimed his fifth wicket, dismissing Sundar for a 46-ball 53. With Sundar’s fall, India’s innings wrapped up, setting England a challenging target of 374 runs — the highest ever chased in a fourth innings at this historic venue if achieved.
Tongue, who has impressed throughout the series, delivered the final blow with a full delivery on the leg stump that induced a leading edge from Sundar as he tried to glance it fine. The ball ballooned into the air, causing a near collision between Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope at mid-wicket. Fortunately for England, Crawley held his nerve and completed the catch, narrowly avoiding a mishap with Pope. The dismissal marked Tongue’s maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Sundar’s enterprising knock included four fours and four sixes, and came at a time when India needed quick lower-order runs. His 53 added crucial resistance, pushing the target beyond the psychological 350-run mark.
Earlier in the over, Tongue had built pressure with a series of short-of-length deliveries and tight lines. Sundar, trying to farm the strike, refused singles and nearly chipped one back to the bowler. Eventually, the pressure told.
As things stand, England will need to rewrite history to win. Their highest successful fourth-innings chase at The Oval is 263/9, achieved way back in 1902. Notably, their highest fourth-innings total at this venue is 369/6, which came in a drawn Test against India in 2007.

Over Summary: 2 0 4 4 6 1; India after 87 overs: 396-9; Washington Sundar 53(40; Prasidh Krishna 0(2)
Washington Sundar lit up the final session of Day 3 in the fifth Test against England with a dazzling counterattack, notching up a brisk half-century under pressure. Facing Gus Atkinson in the 87th over, Sundar turned the tide with a breathtaking display of strokeplay that saw him plunder 17 runs in five deliveries.
Sundar reached his fifty in emphatic fashion, launching a length delivery over deep mid-wicket for a towering six. The shot prompted a muted response from Ollie Pope, who had a word with his bowler amid mounting pressure. The milestone came after successive boundaries — one a powerful pull through mid-wicket off a short ball, the other an outside edge flying past a lone slip.
