Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Sunday charged KJP President B S Yeddyurappa with openly supporting Congress in the March 7 urban local body polls to free himself from CBI cases over his alleged involvement in illegal mining. "Yeddyurappa is under the tight grip of Congress due to CBI cases and wants to come out of it. Hence he is openly supporting Congress in the March 7 urban body polls," he told reporters here.  Shettar alleged that Yeddyurappa does not mind Karnataka Janata Party candidates losing the polls, but is coaxing people to vote for Congress to trounce the ruling BJP. "This clearly shows he is under the tight grip of the Congress," he alleged.Yeddyurappa had said yesterday that his Karnataka Janata Party would support Congress in all wards where it did not contest and urged his supporters to work for Congress candidates in such segments to defeat BJP and Janata Dal(S).Shettar was speaking after a BJP road show in the run up to the polls.

A day after a senior police officer was shot dead after being beaten badly by a mob in Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday condoled the death and announced compensation of Rs 20 lakhs to his kin. 	Yadav expressed condolence over the death of Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia-ul-Haq, who was holding charge of Circle Officer Kunda. Haq was killed during a clash between irate locals and the police in Balipura village in Hathgawan area last night.The incident took place after some unidentified persons shot dead village head Nanhe Yadav. A mob soon after attacked the police station and indulged in arson which led to cross-firing between the police and the villagers.Yadav's brother, Suresh, was also killed in the ensuing firing. The situation is stated to be under control now.

The Jalna district administration has sought Rs 495 crore from the high-level Central committee to tackle the severe drought conditions in the district."We presented a report to the Central committee two days back, in which we told them about the water-scarcity, unavailability of fodder and destruction of crop due to deficient rainfall. We have sought Rs 495 crore to tackle drought from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF)," district collector of Jalna, Shyam Deshpande said.The committee was shown the work done under MGNREGA scheme. "There are around 13,000 labourers working under the MGNREGA scheme. But the demand for jobs will increase from April," he said.Deshpande said the district administration also sought financial assistance for the cleaning of the three lakes (Ghanewadi, Moti and Mukteshwar), medicines for cattles and to make drinking water available for animals.

A high court cannot direct the state to part with its exclusive privilege in the matter of granting licence for establishing distilleries under the Foreign Liquor (Compounding, Blending and Bottling) Rules, 1975 and the Abkari Act. The Supreme Court stated so last week while allowing the appeal of the Kerala government in the case, State of Kerala vs Kandath Distilleries. It overturned the judgment of the Kerala high court on this question. In this case, the government received a large number of applications from liquor manufacturers for setting up units in different districts of the state. However, Kandath was not granted licence as the government maintained that its application was defective. The distillery moved the high court which stated that the government had ingenuously made a classification to weed out the firm and ordered it to grant licence.
