Yellen says US banking system remains sound after 'decisive' actions

A week after the second-largest bank collapse in US history, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday that the nation's banking system remains sound and Americans "can feel confident about their deposits. Yellen is the first Biden administration official to face lawmakers over the decision to protect uninsured money at two failed regional banks, a move that some Republicans have criticized as a bank bailout. The government took decisive and forceful actions to strengthen public confidence in the U.S. banking system, Yellen said in testimony before the committee. I can reassure the members of the Committee that our banking system remains sound, and that Americans can feel confident that their deposits will be there when they need them." In less than a week, Silicon Valley Bank, based in Santa Clara, California, failed after depositors rushed to withdraw money amid anxiety over the bank's health. Then, regulators convened over the weekend and ...

Global shares mostly rose on Tuesday, boosted by a rally on Wall Street, as investors waited for US consumer price data due out later in the day. France's CAC 40 added nearly 0.1 per cent in early trading to 7,214.85, while Germany's DAX also rose less than 0.1 per cent, to 15,400.76. Britain's FTSE 100 gained 0.4 per cent to 7,976.92. The future for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1 per cent while that for the S and P 500 gained 0.2 per cent. Sentiments are largely tracking the positive handover from Wall Street overnight, although much is still up in the air, Yeap Jun Rong, a market analyst at IG, said in a commentary. In a mixed sign of Japan's shaky recovery, government data showed the world's third largest economy grew at an annual pace of 0.6 per cent in October-December, as restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic eased, both abroad and in Japan. Tourism recovered, as did local travel, and exports grew, the Cabinet Office reported. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 2

'Made in America' is my top priority, says US President Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has said that Made in America is the top priority of his administration and announced that bridges, roads and highways in the country will be made with American construction materials. Biden in his second State of the Union Address on Tuesday said to maintain the strongest economy in the world, the US also needs the best infrastructure in the world. The US used to be number 1 in the world in infrastructure, but then it fell to number 13th, he said. Now we're coming back because we came together to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the largest investment in infrastructure since President Eisenhower's Interstate Highway System, he said. He said 'Buy American' has been the law of the land since 1933. "But for too long, past administrations have found ways to get around it. Not anymore, Biden said in his joint address to the US Congress. Tonight, I'm also announcing new standards to require all construction materials used in federal infrastructure project

US hiring stays brisk as employers add 223,000 jobs in Dec: Labor dept

America's employers added a solid 223,000 jobs in December, evidence that the economy remains healthy yet also a sign that the Federal Reserve may have to raise interest rates more aggressively to slow growth and cool inflation. The December job growth, though a decent gain, amounted to the lowest monthly increase in two years. The unemployment rate remained fell to 3.5%, matching a 53-year low, the Labor Department said Friday. Last month's job growth capped a second straight year of robust hiring during which the nation regained all 22 million jobs it lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet the rapid hiring and the hefty pay raises that accompanied it likely contributed to a spike in prices that catapulted inflation to its highest level in 40 years. The picture for 2023 is much cloudier. Many economists foresee a recession in the second half of the year, a consequence of the Fed's succession of sharp rate hikes. The central bank's officials have projected that those increases will

19-year-old killed in Mall of America in Minnesota shooting, says police

A teenager was killed during a shooting at the Mall of America on Friday that sent frightened customers at the nation's largest shopping center racing into a lockdown just before the holiday weekend, police said. Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges said the victim was a 19-year-old man. A bystander's jacket was also grazed by a bullet. There appeared to be some type of altercation between two groups and at one point, someone pulled out a gun and shot the victim multiple times, the chief said. The Bloomington Police Department responded to the shooting shortly before 8 p.m., the mall said in a statement. The lockdown lasted for about an hour before the mall tweeted that shoppers were being sent outside. Emergency vehicles had converged in the snowy parking lot and police could be seen putting up yellow crime scene tape near the Nordstrom store. Videos posted on social media show shoppers hiding in stores, and an announcement in the mall warned people to seek shelter. Some videos
