Delhi one step closer to data on real-time pollution sources: Kejriwal

A project to identify real-time sources of pollution in Delhi has moved one step closer towards operationalisation, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday. Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Environment Department of Delhi government on Tuesday held the second review meeting of the project Real-time source apportionment study and pollution forecasting' with the team from IIT Kanpur and other partner organisations, the government said in a statement. The project was approved by the Delhi cabinet and a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in October last year. A team of IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI), and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali will execute the study in the national capital. Delhi government's DPCC has been authorised to act as the nodal agency for executing the study with IIT Kanpur. NGT directs pollution boards to strengthen infrastructure of laboratories

The National Green Tribunal Wednesday directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to take steps to strengthen the infrastructure of laboratories of state pollution control boards. The green panel noted that 23 state pollution control boards have filed Action Taken Reports (ATRs) informing it about prescribed minimum inspection frequency for environmental surveillance of industries. In view of the above, the remaining 12 state pollution control boards may also file their action taken report with the CPCB within three months from today. The CPCB and state pollution control board may take further steps for strengthening of their monitoring and related infrastructure, including the infrastructure of laboratories, a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice A K Goel said. It also directed the Haryana government to apprise it about status of fluoride contamination and availability of potable water to the affected inhabitants. NGT asks CPCB to finalise plans for storage, handling of hazardous items

The National Green Tribunal Tuesday directed Central Pollution Control Board and Tamil Nadu pollution control board to finaliseemergency plansfor storage and handling of the hazardous substances within a month. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel passed the order after it was informed that 37 containers with 697 Tonnes of ammonium nitrate were sent to a detonator manufacturing unit having license for ammonium nitrate in Telangana. The issue was taken up after taking cognisance off media reports about storage ofmore than 700 tonnes of the ammonium nitrate, an explosive substance, at a container freight station in Chennai. TheTamil Nadu Pollution Control Board told the NGT that total of 37 containers with 697 Tonnes of ammonium nitrate were sent to Salvo Explosives & Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. in Telangana.
