Govt may come out with logistics cost estimate by Sept: DPIIT Official

The government is working on a framework to assess the logistics cost in the country and is expected to get a realistic estimate by September, a senior DPIIT official said on Friday. At present, the government is going by certain estimates, which suggest that India's logistics cost stands at about 13-14 per cent of the country's GDP (gross domestic product). Special Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Sumita Dawra said that the government is coming out with its logistics cost framework. The framework would include elements of this cost and how to measure that. "So our framework is being done with the help of our technical partner and it's almost done. But then we have to calculate and I think by the month of September, we will have realistic logistics costs in the country. We will define what are the components and we will have our own estimates," she said while speaking at CII's conclave on trade facilitation. Logistics cost plays a ke

Concerned departments may consider course correction for PLI scheme: DPIIT

Concerned departments where the production-linked incentive scheme is not picking up may consider some course correction in the plan, a top government official said on Tuesday. Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh said the concerned ministries have to see if PLI disbursement is low or if firms are not able to meet their performance thresholds, in such cases, sometime relaxations may be required like the way it has been done for the IT sector. Last month, the government announced the PLI 2.0 for IT Hardware with a budgetary outlay of Rs 17,000 crore. "We are hopeful of utilising Rs 1.97 lakh crore for the scheme...but in an individual scheme, there may be some course correction," Singh told reporters here. The government has announced the PLI (production-linked incentive) scheme for as many as 14 sectors, such as telecommunication, white goods, textiles and pharma with an outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore. Hand holding states, govt sellers to integrate with ONDC: DPIIT Joint Secy

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is hand-holding states and central government sellers like handicraft emporiums to gradually integrate with Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a senior official said on Monday. ONDC is an initiative of the DPIIT to create a facilitative model to help small retailers take advantage of digital commerce. It is not an application, platform, intermediary or software but a set of specifications designed to foster open, unbundled, and interoperable open networks. Joint Secretary in the DPIIT Sanjiv said that supporting MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) has been a priority for the ONDC. "This will unlock value in the huge B2B (business-to-business) market by increasing access and discoverability of various businesses across the network. "As we look forward to the integration of credit in the ONDC, the business can hugely benefit from the open network ecosystem by being a part of the ONDC," he said here at

Hardening interest rates, geo-political risks impacting FDI inflows: DPIIT

Hardening interest rates globally and worsening geo-political situation have impacted the foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into India in 2022-23, a top government official said on Tuesday. Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh said that the department would analyse the reasons for the contraction in FDI in five important sectors like computer hardware and software; construction, education, automobiles and metallurgical industries. "I cannot think of any other reason. It is not as if our FDI policies have become protectionist. On the contrary, we have kept it very very liberal ... The decline is combination of hardening of interest rates along with geo-political risks going up around the world. In general the appetite may be less," Singh told PTI in an interview. These five sectors had a share of USD 30 billion in India's total FDI in 2021-22 and in the last fiscal year, overseas inflows have almost halved. "Why ..

DPIIT takes up startup taxation issue with finance ministry: Secretary

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has taken up the taxation issue of startups with the finance ministry, a top government official has said. "Startup India does provide such policy advocacy, particularly on the taxation issue. We have been taking that particular issue that many startups are worried about funding from non-residents...and the initial valuation of the startup, how that tax is calculated. We have taken it up," DPIIT Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said here at an industry interaction. Post the amendments proposed in the Finance Bill, concerns have been raised over the methodology of calculation of fair market value under the two different laws. The Finance Act, 2023, has amended Section 56(2)(viib) of the I-T Act, thereby bringing overseas investment in unlisted closely held companies, except DPIIT-recognised startups, under the tax net. The Income Tax department is expected to soon come out with certain draft rules to specify the class o

We are not trying to put anybody out of business through ONDC: DPIIT Secy

The government wants all e-commerce players to become part of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and this initiative is not trying to put anybody out of business, a top official said on Thursday. Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh said that the idea is to democratise the e-commerce for MSMEs and smaller producers in the remote parts of the country and provide them a level playing field. It's not that we are trying to put anybody out of business, or we are an upfront competitor to any particular portal or any particular e-commerce provider. We are actually inclusive, we want all e-commerce players to be part of this network, Singh told reporters here. The statement assumes significance as there were certain reports that prices of certain food products are much cheaper at the seller apps on-boarded the ONDC initiative as compared to the renowned food delivery services players' prices.
